Ant Goodwin's Funeral - 12th of September 2018

Ant Goodwin sadly passed away on the 24th August 2018 following a short illness.

Ant has been a long-time member of LFCC and a B ride stalwart, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The club would like to extend its sympathies to all his friends and family.

RIP Ant!

Funeral:

Important please note change of meet time: Cyclists will need to be at the start (Coop funeral place at 511 Welford Road) for 1.45pm rather than 2.30pm as was originally suggested.

Ant Goodwin's funeral will take place on Wednesday the 12th of September 2018 at 3.00pm and will take place at Countesthorpe crematorium. For those who would like to ride with the hearse, the cortege will leave the Co-op Funeral Directors, 511 Welford Road at 1:45pm.

After the service there will be refreshments back at Welford Road. Ant's family would like an estimate of numbers both riding and returning for refreshments, could you please indicate below ASAP if you're likely to attend the ride and/or the wake afterwards.

I'm hoping that the club can provide a big turnout, if you can make it please do come along.

Thanks

Rob Jones

The Rockets have gone into orbit!

Our junior section, the Rockets, have had an absolutely stonking 2018 – they’ve won this year’s Mallory Park Youth Road Race League with an astonishing 1007 points – beating their nearest rivals by over 170 points!

On top of that phenomenal team effort, three of our riders have finished 1st in their age categories:

Eva Leavis won the Under 8s, Bethany-Ann Jackson won the Under 12s and Libby Bell won the Under 14s!

There were also loads of podiums as well as other placings throughout the other categories.

Under 8 Girls
1st - Eva Leavis
2nd – Lilly Gadsby
3rd – Erica Hibble
5th – Bella Gokani
7th – Khia Gokani

Under 10 Girls
2nd - Megan Cherry
5th – Jessica Broadhead

Under 12 Girls
1st - Bethany-Ann Jackson
5th – Ruby-Summer Osborne

Under 14 Girls
1st - Libby Bell

Under 16 Girls
2nd - Annabel Ramsey

Under 8 Boys
4th – Harry Donald

Under 10 Boys
=12th – Joshua Jones

Under 12 Boys
=13th – Ellis Jackson

Under 14 Boys
=13th – Daniel Armstrong

On top of those fantastic placings, there was great progress this year too by Toby and Juri in the highly competitive Under 8 and Under 12 Boys’ leagues respectively – both coming tantalisingly close to the points in a number of races.

Well done to all our riders, and of course our fantastic coaching and support teams – More of the same for next season please!

Shelly's off on another adventure...!

Our very own Mike "Shelly" Sheldrake is off on another one of his frankly mind-boggling adventures. He's going to be taking part in the inaugural Silk Road Mountain Race, through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan.

In his own words:

"Flying out today with my LFCC jersey to take part in the inaugural Silk Road Mountain Race, described as a daring fixed-route, unsupported, single stage cycling race through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan over 1,700km of gravel, single and double track, and old Soviet roads that have fallen into disrepair. As well as over 26,000m of climbing at a debilitating altitude and likely to require some “hike-a-bike”, there's the remoteness of the country itself. At Checkpoint 2, near the Chinese border, there’s almost 400km of road with no prospect of resupply.

The terrain and nature of the course will favour a sturdy setup with significant storage capacity. I will be riding a modified cx bike which probably puts me at a disadvantage compared with the mtb riders. But who knows, first time events are full of unknowns. Race director and founder Nelson Trees says the ideal bike is “probably a rigid 29er with at least 2.0 inch tires”

The race gets underway this Saturday (Editor: 18th August). I hope to make the finishers party a fortnight later. An adventure is guaranteed."

Your Club Needs You!

Dear Members,

Our illustrious club stalwart, Steve "Spilly" Hiill, is stepping down from Time Trial organising for the 2019 season, to take an extremely well-earnt rest.

This means that in order to keep putting on the Open events our club has become renowned for, we need you, the membership, to step up, else they simply will not run.

Steve is very happy to mentor whoever volunteers, so you will certainly be in capable hands.

We need organisers for the long-running Open 25, and the newly established Open 50, and ideally pretty quickly, as we need to submit details to CTT at their Date Setting Conference which is rapidly approaching.

If you'd like to run one (or both?!), or would like more information, you can either reply here, or email me at secretary@leicesterforest.com

Many thanks,

Tom

2018 LFCC Evening 10 TTs

The series of 6 evening 10 mile time trials has been approved, and all the paperwork is complete. Now we need to go about finding volunteers to put them on!

We need a full roster of volunteers signed up in good time before each event - our absolute cut off date is the week before the event - if the roster isn't full by then, the event will be cancelled.

Volunteers will be able to earn a volunteer token for each night they help out, and any LFCC member wishing to compete in the Club TT Trophy, will be required to volunteer for at least one event in order to qualify.

N.B. If you volunteer for an event and that night gets cancelled, it still qualifies as your one night volunteering.

The Championship is based on your 4 best rides out of the maximum 5 events in which you can race (taking out the one volunteered for) - if a subsequent event is cancelled, or there's a night you can't race, meaning for example you only race 3 nights, then the average of the rides completed will be used to bring you up to the four times required for the purposes of the championships.

Please see the roster on the attached link to the Google Drive - you should be able to edit, so please just write your name against the role you wish to help with, on the dates you can.

I'll be setting up Facebook event pages for each night, and if you have any questions about what the roles entail, just drop me a line.

Eric on A Bike is to ride 1000 miles on a 16" Wheel ride for charity.
Eric On A bike 002.JPG

On 30 May 2018 I'm setting off from Canterbury to cycle the 1,000 mile pilgrim route to Rome. On a three-speed folding bike with 16" wheels that people have unkindly described as "that clown bike"!  Hopefully arriving in Rome before my return journey by train on 20 June...

Along the way I'm looking to raise money for Leicester Wheels for All, a great local charity that seeks to help anyone, regardless of ability, enjoy the sheer pleasure of cycling.

To find out more, or to make a donation, please visit the web page below. And rest assured that every penny donated will go directly to the charity - I'm funding the ride myself, and unlike JustGiving, MyDonate takes no commission from donations.

Best wishes and thanks for reading
