LFCC News March 2021

With all club activities paused during the lockdown, there's not been a lot of club news to report. With spring, and now the relaxation of the lockdown around the corner, we hope to have rides up and running again soon.

AGM

We are pleased to announce that all committee roles were filled during our virtual AGM on the 8th of February. Andy Packer has now taken over from Rob Dyson as the club's membership secretary - many thanks to Rob Dyson for his years of service to the club and numerous thoughtful contributions under 'Any Other Business' to committee meetings.

We had a brief technical issue in the membership handover which is now fixed, which means there are a few outstanding applications from the last few weeks, these will all be resolved very shortly.

LFCC Women's Advocate

As part of the club's commitment to women's cycling, and to encourage women into the club, Louise Hughes has taken on the committee role of 'Women's Advocate' (we may change the title if we come up with something better).

In the first instance, Louise will help to signpost women to different parts of the club and to put like-minded women in touch with each other. If this is of interest to you, please email Louise on women@leicesterforest.com.

LFCC Bursary

Applications for the LFCC Member's bursary are now open, and will close on Friday 30th April 2021, 23:59. You can find details of the members bursary, and how to apply here.

Open Time Trial Organisers

Our time trial secretary Matt Finch, is looking for event organisers for this year's open TTs. If time trials are your thing, and you'd like to get involved helping to organising ours, please put your head above the parapet and get in touch with Matt by email at tt@leicesterforest.com. As with all club events, we need club members to make them happen.

Club Email Addresses

All club email addresses have now been migrated over to the .com domain. Please only use .com and not .org.uk going forward else we will miss your emails. You can contact the committee using the email addresses listed on the contacts page.

Resumption of Club Rides

We are planning to resume Saturday and Sunday club rides in line with the latest guidance after the 29th of March. As we are a British Cycling affiated club, it is permissible for us to have groups of up to 15 riders, however, the committee have decided that we will limit groups to a maximum of 10 riders.

Smaller groups will help relieve some of the anxiety around starting to ride in groups again. Groups bigger the 10 tend to annoy drivers and get more difficult to manage on the road.

For Saturdays and Sundays, we will be asking members to sign up in advance to allow us to manage numbers and keep records, as we did in the summer and autumn last year. More details will follow.

For the avoidance of any doubt, club member organised rides e.g. chaingang, badgers etc are not formal club rides and will therefore be subject to the rule of six when group rides resume.

And Finally

A massive congratulations to Libby Bell who has signed for the Garden Shed UK - SCOTT - Verge Sport Cyclocross Team! Libby will continue Leicester Forest CC member racing road for the club this year.

See you out on the road in a few short weeks.

AGM 2021 Update

Just a quick update on the AGM, further to the email sent to all members on the 18th January.

Committee Positions

We have had single nominations for all committee positions except the role of membership secretary. We are therefore still looking for a member that would be willing to serve the club in this role - if you would like to find out more about the role please contact Rob D via email on membership@leicesterforest.com. If you would like to nominate yourself, please email Pete A on secretary@leicesterforest.com.

The membership secretary role looks after membership applications, maintains our members list, sends emails and letters to the whole club on behalf of the committee. The role is central to the functioning of the club. Please do consider putting yourself forward for this role.

Virtual AGM (Monday 8th Feb, 7pm)

As outlined in the email on the 18th, we will not be having a meeting in person this year. As a consequence, the reports which are normally given in the AGM have already been emailed out to the membership.

We are however planning to have an virtual meeting on the 8th February for two purposes, normally covered at the AGM:

  1. To allow the membership to ask any questions relating the the reports;
  2. To elect members to the committee.

Our intention had been, should more than one candidate be proposed and a be vote required, to capture the membership's votes via email (as managing a vote in the virtual meeting facilities we have is difficult).

As we only have single nominations for each committee role (with the exception of membership as above), there is no requirement for a vote. We shall however use the virtual meeting to 'second' any candidates and appoint candidates to the committee.

We will send details of the virtual meeting (8th Feb, 7pm) via email to all members closer to the time. Hope to see you there.

Club Ride re-starts

In line with government and BC guidlines, club rides will restart next weekend (5th December).

As before, you will need to sign up for the Saturday and Sunday rides on the website by 8PM the Thursday prior to the ride. Email notifications will then go out, by the very latest the night before the ride, with details of the group and the route.

The same gang will be putting togther Saturdays and Sundays, however if you would like to help, or have route suggestions, please let us know at website@leicesterforest.com.

Note we are not planning a ride for the 26th December where you'll be left to fend for yourself!

2021 Membership Is Due in December

If you pay by standing order, you will have seen the recent correspondance requesting members increase their S/O to align with the new membership costs. If you've not done this yet, please, please, please do it now before the start of December and let Rob D know at membership@leicesterforest.com. If you don't update in time, it will get very messy and cause you and us a lot more hassle when we have to fix it.

If you don't currently pay by standing order please consider setting this up (in time to go out early December this year). Membership is cheaper via S/O as we don't have to cover the paypal fees. If you're adamant that you want to pay more than your club mates, please use the website to pay for your 2021 membership now (https://www.leicesterforest.com/clubmembership).

Cafe Ventoux Affiliation

We're please to announce that with immediate effect, all LFCC members will be entitled to a 10% discount at Cafe Ventoux with proof of club membership. In practice, this means wearing a club jersey (or digging out your membership card). They've advised that their staff may not remember, so don't feel shy about asking for the discount. Cafe Ventoux remains open during this second lockdown. Other cafes are available.

LFCC History Film - Help Needed

You may have seen the short films of LFCC Rockets and LFCC Ladies recently. A third film is in production on the history of LFCC. We looking for still imagery to be included over which there will be narration etc. If you have any interesting photos etc over the years that helps to tell the story of the club, and you are happy for their inclusion in the film, please get in touch (website@leiceterforest.com).

Events

AGM

We've penciled in the LFCC AGM for 1st February 2021 at 7PM. This will almost certainly be a video/zoom/meet/teams format, so this year there's no need to even leave the comfort of you living room.

Got to the bottom? Now's a good time to update or setup your standing order!

Club Ride Update - 1/11/12

Club Ride Update

Sadly, in line with government restrictions announced over the weekend, from Thursday 5th November club rides will be suspended in all formats. We hope to resume group rides as soon as restrictions are lifted in early December and will announce any changes on the club website.

Leicester Forest
Club Ride Update - 13/10/12

IMPORTANT CHANGES

With the recent changes to restrictions and the introduction of the traffic light system, we are making further changes to club rides.

As a club we are in a difficult position where (at the time of writing) members who live in Leicester and Oadby & Wigston fall under alert level 'high', whereas members that live in wider Leicestershire fall under the 'medium' alert category.

Under the 'high' alert level socialising indoors is forbidden - this will include cafe stops.

The option to create groups by both post-code and speed is considered to be impracticle. The option of suspending club rides is something we want to avoid if at all possible.

As consequence, we have decided that for the time being our club rides will not have cafe stops. We will shorten routes a little and try to include a co-op/garage type stop where we can get a quick hot drink and something to eat outside.

Whilst we know this is not ideal, in the circumstances, we see that this is the only we can continue to run club rides within the rules and play our part in limiting social contact.

Thanks for your understanding.

Club Ride Update - September 2020

Club Ride Update

We're now six weeks on from re-starting Saturday club rides and the general feedback is that it's going well. Sign-up is a bit of a pain, but it works well to manage group sizes in advance.

On Saturdays we usually have 4 groups with the speeds ranging from 15 - 19mph. On Sundays we usually have 2 groups ranging between 14 and 16mph. We've even had groups with more women than men!

The organisation is being done by Dave A, Simon A, Kim S and Geoff M, so let them know you appreciate the hard work.

As we've limited our group sizes to six, the 'rule of six' makes no significant change in our approach to club rides. We'd ask everyone in the club to remain vigilant to make sure that groups larger than six do not form, else you'll be on the wrong side of the law.

We are making two changes at this stage:

  1. Opening up club rides to non-members. Non-members will be allocated into gaps in groups, members will be given priority;

  2. To reduce the number of no-shows, we will push the Saturday sign-up deadline back to Thursday 8pm instead of Wednesday. With late cancellations we've ended up with some very small groups on the day which isn't ideal.

Whilst the staggered starts generally work, with people a few minutes early or a few minutes late there is some risk of overlapping groups for a couple of minutes. If you do arrive early - whilst it will not feel natural at all - please respect the limit of 6 and keep at a distance. Cases are sadly on the rise.

We recognise this is going to get harder as the temperature drops and the weather turns, so expect some further changes as we adapt to the circumstances.

Steady Sunday Ride

Geoff is planning a slower Sunday Social ride (12-13mph) on Sunday 4th October. This is an excellent starting point if you're worried about the speeds or have found other rides too quick. Sign-up will be as per usual on the website which will go live the week prior.

Sign-Ups

Saturday sign-up closes the Thursday 8pm before the Saturday here: https://www.leicesterforest.com/saturday-club-rides-distancing

Sunday sign-up closes the Thursday 8pm before the Sunday here: https://www.leicesterforest.com/sunday-social-distancing

Everyone signed up will recieve an email with details of the ride but sometimes these end up in spam folders so please double check if you've not received anything by the night before the ride.

Meeting at the Bulls Head

As per our previous request, if you are not taking part in club rides please help us by not using the Bull's Head as a meeting point Saturdays 0830-0915 and Sundays 0930-1000.

Leicester Forest
Club Run Restart - August 2020

In anticipation of the lifting of the Leicester lock-down, we are making plans to re-start club runs (subject to release of the Leicester restrictions). The earliest possible date for this will be the 1st August. Please make yourself aware of the changes in ride format:

  1. To participate in a club run you must sign up here, prior to the ride. If restrictions are lifted this week, we will open this up for a short window this Thursday (30th) evening only. If you want to ride, watch out for our announcements and sign up this Thursday evening. The sign up deadline will revert to Wednesdays 8pm thereafter. The sign up form is currently disabled but will be enabled when restrictions lift.

  2. In-line with British Cycling guidance, groups will be limited to a maximum of six riders, as far as possible grouped by speed.

  3. To co-ordinate the logistics, each group will have a voluntary group coordinator. The group coordinator will set the ride off, agree any route changes within the group and feedback to the committee on what worked and what didn’t work. The number of groups will be limited by the number of group coordinators, hence the only way to guarantee a ride is to volunteer as part of the sign-up.

  4. All riders must observe social distancing when meeting, during and after the ride.

  5. Start times for each group will be staggered between 08.30-09.15. Generally, faster groups will set off first to ensure groups not merge or pass on the road. Groups will use different routes and stops to ensure large numbers of LFCC riders do not arrive at the same cafe at the same time.

  6. You will be notified by email of your group, start time and route. On the Saturday, please arrive on-time to help make this work.

  7. We will ride two abreast where it is safe to do so.

  8. Riders are asked to bring a face covering (or mask) as required for cafes, and gloves should you need to help a fellow rider out at close quarters. Riders are also advised to familiarise themselves with Section Two of British Cycling’s The Way Forward guidance (click here to view)

  9. Where possible a cafe stop may be included on the route, however don’t rely on it. Most cafes have very limited service at the moment, so please bring something to eat with you.

We would ask all LFCC riders that do not wish to take part, to avoid using the Bulls Head as a meeting point on Saturdays 0830-0915.

For now we will limit this to club members only until we are happy with the format, but will be looking to widen participation in the future.

For more information on the revised format club rides, please see our website here.

We want your feedback on what works and what doesn’t. We’re also going to need lots of routes suggestions and cafe stops. Please send us your ideas and general feedback to website@leicesterforest.com

LFCC News - July 2020

News

Over the last few months there hasn’t been much LFCC news to report, but with the easing of the lock-down, and hopefully the easing of the Leicester lock-down soon, we will begin to see some club activities resume.

Our last event was the Rutland and Beyond Audax, way back in February! After a few false start due to storms and HQ availability, the event ran on the 23rd February with over 100 entries and 45 riders on the day braving the typical February conditions. Our April 200km Audax ‘Another Slice of Rutland’ was cancelled, as were June’s evening 10 time trials. The decision was made early on to also suspend the Century Challenge given the circumstances.

During lock-down, LFCC has been represented virtually at the East Midlands Interclub Zwift League by both our men and women and at the end of June LFCC were third in the league. Our junior section, LFCC Rockets, have met most weeks for virtual roller sessions - thanks to Helen Jackson for organising these.

Looking Forward

Following July’s committee meeting, we now have a skeleton plan for resuming club runs. There was unanimous agreement however that we should wait until the Leicester lock-down is ended. Due to the need to limit group sizes to 6, it's going to take some significant organisation so please watch this space. Initially we will limit this to Saturdays and club members only, until we are happy that the format works and everyone understands how to make it work.

It looks likely that we will need volunteer leads/coordinators to make each group of six work. We will only be able to run as many groups as we have coordinators, so when we’re ready, please consider volunteering for this.

The Century Challenge is now back up and running, however should you be unable to ride this month due to the Leicester lock-down, the same code can be entered this month and riders will not be disqualified (see here).

Unfortunately our September road race has now been cancelled. Our Open 10 TT, scheduled for the 2nd August is currently under review. This situation around the cyclo-cross race (November) is still evolving and will depend on the LXCL decision to run the league or otherwise - hopefully we can run a least one race this year!

If you have any news you’d like to be included in this semi-regular update, please let us know at website@leicesterforest.com

LFCC Members Facebook Group

We’re please to announce that we now have an LFCC members Facebook group.

The original LFCC facebook group has evolved over time to over 1600 members and with a club membership of c. 300, it’s clear that the vast majority of people using the group are not members. To redress this and to be of more use to the membership the committee has decided to create a members only group.

To make this work, when you apply to join the group we need your name and membership number. Because we will verify each member, there will be a lag before being let into the group, so please be patient particularly while the group is still new.

The LFCC Members group can be found here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/lfccmembers

No decision has been made yet on the future of the existing group. For now the old group will remain as the ‘external’ group, and the members only group as the ‘internal’ facebook group.

LFCC in 1947

An old member (the oldest former member we know of) of the club got in touch and provided this great description of the club back in 1947…things both change and stay the same.

Hi.

I googled LFCC and was amazed that you still existed.

I joined LFCC in 1947 and it was a much smaller club then, probably about 60 members at most. It was a very friendly club. Sunday club runs were always taken at the pace of the slowest rider. We would stop at a pub for a pint and our packed lunches then continue to the highlight of the day, our pre-booked tea stop, where we had a table full of sandwiches and cakes. which was quite remarkable in post war Britain where everything was still rationed.

We held time trials on the six hills road, massed start races in Spinney Hill park and grass track races in Abbey park and the concrete track of Wicksteed park.

I am now in my 90’s but frequently think of my cycling days.

Still vertical.

Upcoming Events

Please put these in your diary as we’ll be coming asking for volunteers very soon!

The President's Annual Report

A transcript of the President’s annual report for year ending 2019 as presented at the AGM:

Welcome, thank you for attending this meeting tonight. I will now report on the club’s and committee’s activities during the past season.

Looking back over the year I think we can be pleased with the progress that we’ve made. Members continue to have a strong representation in most of the main cycling disciplines both on and off road. The club’s own events calendar is now well established with events running across most disciplines. I think this is reflective of how healthy the club is. All of these events have been organised very professionally and have been well attended by both our own members and those from other clubs. The past year has seen three open time trial events one of which was cancelled due to the weather, an evening 10 series, a road race, circuit races, a Cyclocross race, and 3 Audax events, more of which later.

The club’s membership continues to be strong, the club had 315 members at the close of the club’s financial year at the end of November two down on 2018. Our junior section takes up just over a 1/4 of our total membership. Female membership stands at 60, many of whom are juniors. This bodes well for the future of this club. Female membership has been growing steadily over the past few years and a commitment remains to try and increase female membership within the club.

The committee met on ten occasions through the year, most committee meetings were attended by enough committee members to allow business to take place although it was apparent that only half of those committee members were regularly present at meetings and this put additional strain on those present to get the work done. At committee, there were two decisions made to change either the wording or phrases within the constitution or rules. This is regarding the cost of membership and the maximum allowable number of members allowed to represent at committee as per the club’s constitution. A discussion regarding this will be held shortly.

A number of topics and issues were dealt with by committee members over the past year as follows:

  • The committee launched its membership questionnaire as promised and at the beginning of the year the returned data was extrapolated. This information being used in part to determine both current issues within the club and in part the future direction of the club.

  • The committee resolved to improve the club’s publicity material and professionally consulted on a number of design outcomes. As a result, the club has branded Gazebos, banners, pennant flags and stickers as well as downloadable design work relating to the administration of the club such as letter headings and business cards. The design and production of these items was costly but in the opinion of the committee very much needed.

  • As part of the drive for better publicity and easier communication between the club and its membership the committee had pursued the possibility of developing a quarterly newsletter, ultimately this deemed itself unfeasible in terms of the hours needed to collate material and in terms of the cost of its publishing especially in light of us establishing a news feed directly to member’s inboxes.

  • Once again the club offered bursaries to its members five applicants were made and four were successful with Annabel Ramsay, Beth Jackson, Daniel Armstrong from the Rockets using the money to cover fees for national events whilst Lucy asked for money to support a Women’s team for the National Time Trial Championship. Unfortunately Lucy had to withdraw her application. Hopefully she will resubmit for this year’s event. The club will again offer the bursary scheme in 2020 thanks in part to the generous donation from the family of Tom Graham who has recently rejoined the club.

With regard to a club house the situation remains similar to last year. We have been in sporadic contact with Leicester Race Walking Club and they are still awaiting a report from their insurers regarding future limits on use or even whether it should be demolished. It effectively remains unusable for meetings and events although we still use it for storage and can access equipment from it. We are trying to foster closer links with New College where the Rockets currently reside. We have identified accommodation there which we could use and I have been in contact with New College regarding this which has proved to be a frustrating task so far. Our main concern is further storage this may mean the purchase of further containers and the club leasing rooms on an as you use basis. On behalf of BC, the City Council and New college there is still a desire to fund and build accommodation relating to the cycling track and the club would be party to this and have the opportunity to lease a part of it should that building come to fruition.

With the help of the City Council the club have invested in a film that highlights a number of successful elements relating to the club, including the Rockets, women’s cycling and the club runs. The film was produced by Keith Allott who is a professional film maker. The committee hope that this will form a useful promotional tool as well as being of interest archivally in the future.

The club repaired the LCA roller racing kit last year with a view to it being used at events, members of the committee have been sourcing bikes and frames to go with them, there is a commitment to try and get this off the ground at some point, although that will depend on volunteers coming forward to set up and run events.

Cub runs, the mainstay of club activity have, in recent weeks suffered from some issues and complaints, there have been reports of selfish riding by a small number our members. The committee will endeavour to ensure that the riding culture within the club changes for the better on our club runs.

2019 Event reports

Firstly, I’d like to thank all of the organisers for the events that they’ve run over the past year and all of the volunteers who have helped to make these events happen.

We have had around 75 individual members volunteer their time at our events but this still only represents about a third of our total senior membership and so we still have a little way to go to persuade others to take part.

We have been making inroads into making volunteering for events a simple process but we still have major events where filling the volunteer spaces required in good time is an ongoing battle and very stressful for the organisers I believe that this issue is having a detrimental effect on the willingness of our members to continue in agreeing to undertake the organisation of some of our major events. Volunteering is an issue that the committee will continue to try to tackle in 2020. The committee also hope to put in place coordinators to facilitate a more cohesive and supported approach to organising our events.

Audax

Rutland and Beyond – This 100km audax took place in early February from Keyham village hall, a change of venue since 2018, the venue change being a result of us no longer being able to use Haynes Road, numbers were down on previous years and this is probably attributable to Welland Valley CC holding their reliability ride on the same day, unfortunately there were some issues related to parking and access for villagers but these were unforeseeable at the time and this years incarnation will be run from Thurnby instead. The event was as always excellently run by Kim Suffolk who unfortunately has now stepped down from his role in organising this ride. I’d like to thank Kim for the effort he’s put in over the years. This year’s event is still open please visit AUK to enter.

Another Slice of Rutland made another appearance on the calendar. A route that takes in Lincolnshire, Rutland, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. 63 riders started from Oadby Youth Centre for the start. There was a good showing of LFCC riders as well as riders from across the East and West Midlands, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Essex. 56 riders made it back to the start. The ride is again being organised by Steve Orchard and is up on the AUK calendar if you wish to enter.

The Leicester Triangle 200km was also run out of Oadby youth centre, there were just over 30 entries with 22 starters, all finished, one making full value of the time at his disposal.

Time Trials

  • Open 25TT was due to take place on the A25/37 course but unfortunately the event had to be cancelled due to the weather.

  • Open 50TT was run on the A50/13 course on the 30th of June in slightly cold windy conditions. The event was won by Matt Bottrill in 1.42:47. Participation by LFCC riders was scant with only Sarah Soden participating. Her time was 2.31:29. Thanks to Dan Gadsby for organising.

  • Open 10TT was run on the A10/13 course and was won by David Mead in a time of 19.38. The fastest LFCC rider was Kenny Cliffe with a time of 21.42. There were 59 starters out of 70. Thanks go to Thomas Key for organising.

  • Evening 10s ran 6 events in 2019 but only 4 ran due to calls on the weather which in both cases proved to be premature. Average rider numbers were around 20 with John Powell winning the Men’s category and Lucy Sturgess winning the Women’s. It is hoped that the club will adopt different, possibly new courses for 2020 as well as maintaining the current course. This will mean that the championship will be split into two events on three different courses.

Road Race

The road race was once again run under the umbrella of the EMRRL, and again it was run as a national B event so open to E,1,2,3 categories. The race was won by Charles Page. Wayne Henderson did a fantastic job of organising again last year but has unfortunately stepped down from organising which leaves this year’s race in doubt. Wayne was also instrumental in running the circuit races on New College track and again these races remain without an organiser.

Cyclocross

Superbly organised by Andreas Quansah in his first year with mentoring from Alan Bontoft and an army of helpers. with an excellent turnout and representation in every category from LFCC. Thanks to Andreas for organising.

Annual Dinner, 25th Jan, Queen of Bradgate, 7pm

This years annual dinner will be held at a new venue, upstairs at the Queen of Bradgate. If you’ve not purchased your tickets yet, they will be on sale until this Wednesday, the 22nd. If you miss the cut-off but still want to come, please get in touch with rob.jones@leciesterforest.org.uk and we’ll try to squeeze you in. Over 70 tickets sold so far, so you’ll be in good company.

The dinner is a great way to meet other people in the club and to get a sense of what’s going on outside of the areas you normally participate in. In addition to the usual food, drinks and awarding of trophies, the cinema room will be showing the short film made about the club over the last 12 months. For the more competitive amongst us, there will be a quiz and also ping pong.

Club Annual General Meeting, 27th Jan, The Black Horse, Aylestone, 7pm

The club AGM appoints members to the committee roles - it is essential that the roles of President, Secretary and Treasurer are filled to enable the club to continue to function. In addition, there are two new motions, 1) to increase membership fees in December 2020 and 2) to increase the number of committee roles to 14. AGMs may not be the most exciting of club events, but they are essential, and allow members to govern appointments to the committee which ultimately drives the direction of the club.

If you are unable to attend please send your apologies to rob.jones@leicesterforest.org.uk

Race Organising Team - Road & CX Race 2020

This year we are looking to put together a team of people to help organise both the road race and/or the cross race rather than a single person shouldering all the responsibility. If you've thought about helping in the past, but feel that taking the whole race on is too big, this is a good opportunity to get your feet wet. If you’re interested in joining the race organising team, be that a small or a big role, please contact rob.jones@leicesterforest.org.uk.

Club Ride Etiquette

Following a run of fragmented club rides, you may have seen a number of Facebook posts on club ride etiquette on behalf of the club. As a club, we’ve always taken a ‘collegiate’ approach to club rides and not appointed ride captains, which means there may not be an obvious person to approach on a ride if you have concerns or frustrations.

If you have concerns, the most effective route to having your voice heard is to contact the committee in confidence rather than escalate the issue on social media.

LFCC Rockets End of Year Celebration, 25th Nov

This Monday 25th November sees the last session of LFCC rockets training for 2019 at Leicester Cycle Circuit, New College. As a celebration of their hardwork this year, we are holding an inter-club special night. All members are welcome to attend, spectate, get involved with timing events or mingling with parents. Most of them are riders, yet few ride regularly with the club, why not come down and convince them to give it a go! Thanks to experienced and newly skilled coaches, the children's technical ability and team spirit are often commented on at local, regional and national events. Come and see why they are so special!

Riders arrive from 6pm, with a short awards presentation at 7.30pm before closing.
